New Year's Resolutions for 2008

****************************************************************************

****************************************************************************

Name: Debra Archer

Location: Clearfield, Pennsylvania
Resolution: My goal is to attain my Emergency Number Professional Certification by October 2008 by studying for and passing the exam. I'll be 50 this year. I've been involved in the 911 arena for 28 years. I need to stay on the cutting edge and be recognized as a professional.

Update 3/1/08: I'm on my way. I signed up for a study group in order to pass the certification exam.

Update 11/1/08:  I passed the exam last month! I am awaiting official notification before I can consider myself an Emergency Number Professional (ENP). So, the goal has been met. On to my advanced certification for Emergency Management. Thanks for the push.

Update 12/1/08:  I DID it! I achieved my goal, which was to pass the Emergency Number
Professional exam in order to gain that professional recognition. I really think the extra "kick in the pants" via these reminders helped me to stay the course. Now to keep the certification up..

****************************************************************************

Name: Mark Cook

Location: Alexandria, Virginia
Resolution: Begin the course of study to obtain the Project Manager  Professional (PMP) certification. I want to be at least half way through the course of study by 2009.

Update 10/1/08:  I'm happy to say that as of 23 September, 2008 I am now a certified Project
Manager Professional:  PMP. Phew!

****************************************************************************

Name: Jerry Gonzaba

Location: San Antonio, Texas
Resolution: 1. Become a better husband by being grateful for the things I have.  My wife will benefit by my actions. 2. Learn the financial aspect of my business by learning and training on our new accounting system, 3. Get married by the church.

Update 10/1/08: Of the three goals I am currently working on 1.  to become a better husband
and be grateful for the things I have and most importantly the wife I have never take her for granted.  2. learn the new accounting system in my business well I have currently been moved to Vault Superintendent of our company in charge of shipments from Central Texas to all of South Texas. and
I am still currently working on Goal #3.  My wife is definitely benefiting from this move.

****************************************************************************

Name: Jean Cahill

Location: Stoughton, Massachusetts
Resolution: My resolution is to stop being a sissy so that I  can be a better manager of my nursing unit.

Update 4/1/08:   I am still having trouble delegating and feeling like I am the boss. I am a unit manager without confidence. I know what to do and how to do it but am too easy on people. This is not a quality of a good manager. My boss says I am good but need to be more stern. My company is sending me to management training so I am hoping to grow and fulfill my new years resolution. Wish me luck!

Update 5/1/08:   I am doing better with my resolution although I am hitting some roadblocks. It is difficult to keep up with all the staff issues I need to deal with and keep up with all the clinical issues other nurses do not have the knowledge of dealing with. I wish there was some way to get more things done in the same time frame. I started management training this week. It was nice to see other managers and charge nurses have the same issues that I do. I am excited to learn that we have a new resource person to help with some issues. I feel like I am gaining more experience as the time goes by. At least my boss thinks I have grown. Until next time..

Update 9/1/08:      My new years resolution is going great. I am really learning how to
communicate well. Just yesterday I stood up to all the higher-ups in my building. The politics in a business can really have an impact on your department. I work on a very busy sub acute nursing unit. I've learned that it is a fine line between being a manager and being a worker. There is a very delicate balance between who works under you and who communicates the company's agenda. I have to follow the policies, even if I do not agree with all of them, and discipline staff when indicated but still be able to get them to do what I need and "treat them like family". It is difficult not being, "one of the guys" but I have learned first hand why it is not possible to be this and be a boss.  I  feel I have grown since you first asked me for my resolution. I have learned how to delegate more and speak up for my unit to get what my patients and staff need in this difficult period of healthcare in the US.

Name: Herb Hamilton

Location: Elverson, Pennsylvania
Resolution: I resolve to give more money away to charity.  Specifically a 10% increase over what I gave in 2007.

Update 4/1/08:  Tough economy is making it hard to keep my resolution.  But I am giving more to charities than I did last year.  I am also giving more of my time so it's a double bonus. Thanks for checking up.

Update 7/1/08:  This public resolution of personal accountability is the equivalent to a declaration of self-independence.  The excuses to fail in giving 10% more money to charity are built in this year.  Fuel costs, food costs, a bleak economic outlook and family woes are combining to provide reasons for failure.  I may have given up without this public declaration.

Over the Memorial Day weekend I served at a charity sales event.  I had a great time.  Giving of my time is the single biggest benefit that I have received from my resolution this year.  Yes, I am keeping up with the financial end but I had no idea that I would feel such joy when I gave my time.

Thank you for holding me accountable Glenn!

From the Desk of Glenn Shepard

December 29, 2008

It's hard to believe 2008 is over, isn’t it?

Whether you kept your resolution isn’t as important as the fact that you made one, and had the guts to declare it publicly.

Succeeding is wonderful, but failure is also a part of life.

The thing that’s totally unacceptable is aimlessly wasting a precious year of life without any direction.

That’s why you deserve to be applauded for participating in our 2008 New Year’s Resolution program.

As Rick Warren and Napoleon Hill would say, you’re living your life with a definite purpose.

I’m proud of you, and thank you for letting me play a small part in your life.

If you haven’t yet done so, please send us the final update on your New Year’s resolution for 2008 now by clicking here.

Be sure to include your FIRST AND LAST name in the body of your email so we can match your update with your resolution.

Again, my heartfelt congratulations for making your 2008 count.

That makes you a rare and special individual.

Warmest Regards,

Glenn in Nashville, Tennessee

P.S. We'll open our 2009 New Year's Resolution program in two weeks.

Name: Barbara Latrimore

Location: Ft. Pierce, Florida
Resolution: Keep my house!!  Homeowners insurance & taxes are trying to kick me & my daughter into living in a refrigerator box under the bridge.  I will do my best not to let that happen!!

Update 6/1/08:  Still have my house!! These trying times will either make me or break me. Although, I thought I made myself quite some time ago, challenges keep appearing. Like it or not. I AM A SURVIVOR, I will not go down without a battle!!

****************************************************************************

****************************************************************************

Name: Renee Redding

Location: La Verne, California
Resolution: I will find a new job closer to home so I don't have to  make the 85 mile commute anymore, and I can spend more time with my family.

Update 4/1/08: I am working on it. I am in the process of redoing my resume and I am looking at companies that I want to work for. Thanks for keeping me accountable.

****************************************************************************

****************************************************************************

Name: Karen Quaritius

Location: Green Cove Springs, Florida

Resolution: This year I resolve to take control of my finances.

Update 3/1/08: I am happy to report I have been doing very well with my resolution to take control of my finances.  My budget is working so far, and it feels so good to be in control.  I can’t express how cool it was when, in the first week of applying my new way of life, I had a flat tire that could not be plugged and had to be replaced.  Not only did I still have money in the bank two days before payday (unheard of before turning over a new leaf), but I was able to purchase the new tire and stay within my allowance for the week!  I was so stoked; I called my brother the banker who is helping me get on track.  I usually don’t do New Year’s resolutions because I never wanted to set myself up for failure.  (I now see the errors in that statement.)

Name: Beth Miller

Location: Wolcott, Connecticut
Resolution: Become a stronger, more positive manager while seeking a suitable replacement for my position. This will allow my husband and myself to transition gracefully into our next phase - retirement!

Update 4/1/08:  Progress is slow, but your reminder has given me a push to keep moving towards being a stronger, more assertive manager. THANKS!

Update 7/1/08: Progress- I wish I could say that it is going GREAT, but it is not! I am moving VERY slowly in the right direction, but this "resolution" was (and is) a huge task. Some of the progress towards my goal of relinquishing my manager position is related to other individuals' decisions: ie: exit strategies for the controlling partner, sale of the practice. On a more positive note, I feel I have become a little less "wishy-washy" of a manager thru all of this. I have been better able to confront employees with issues! So, like I said, progress is slow, but it is in the right direction!
Thanks for keeping me on track with your reminder!

****************************************************************************

Name: Judy Stella

Location: Derry, New Hampshire

Resolution: I resolve that I will have a healthy and happier year. 2007 was the worst year I've had in my 53 years on this planet. My health was extremely bad and on top of it I got a divorce after 33 years of marriage. I'm looking at 2008 as the beginning of a new life!

Update 10/1/08:  I was so looking forward to this year.  I was keeping my head above water and was pretty healthy.  Then on May 27th I slipped and fell at work.  My left foot was broken (my toes were dislocated from my foot), my right knee was badly bruised and I injured my right shoulder.  I
had surgery in June to repair my foot.  There are now 2 long screws holding my toes on.  I was
out of work for 2 months.  I had physical therapy on both my foot and shoulder.  My shoulder
was not responding so they finally did a MRI.  I have a torn rotator cuff.  I am scheduled for
surgery on the shoulder within the next week.  I will be out of work for at least another 6
weeks with another 2 months of physical therapy.  In the February timeframe I will have to have
surgery on my foot to remove the screws.  I am having trouble keeping up with the bills and I'm
working with the mortgage company to try and get a loan modification so that I can keep my
house.  Heating season is upon us in the Northeast and oil prices are crazy.

All in all I'm holding up.  Even if I lose my house it's not the worse thing that could happen.
I have terrific family and friends.  I still have my job that I love (I've been at the company
for 30 years).  I just found out that accidents aren't for sissies either!!

****************************************************************************

Name: Dave Mantz

Location: Andreas, Pennsylvania
Resolution: To enjoy my family more.

Update 4/1/08: I have taken some time off work to go to NYC and see two Broadway shows.  It was new to me and is something my family (and I) really enjoyed.

Update 7/1/08: I've taken time out of my schedule to attend my daughters field hockey games, and my sons ice hockey games.  Spent some time riding horses with my daughter.  Trying to be supportive of my wife in a trying time for her.  Her mother is very sick.

Thanks for making me reflect on the recent past, and be accountable in the future.

****************************************************************************

Name: Diane Williams

Location: Richmond Hill, Georgia
Resolution: To be the very best I can be as a Christian, wife, mother,  grandmother and co-worker. I didn't reach my goal in 2007 but I did  make many positive changes in my life. 2008 is going to be a GREAT year.  My finances need some help too!!

Glenn thank you for being my tough love brother.

Update 3/1/08: Thank you for taking time for me....the last 2 months have been great. My husband and I are involved with a new motorcycle ministry at our church and it is amazing how God will work in your life when you become available and obedient. I have lost 13 lbs. and feel so much better, not only because of the weight but treating my body a little better with good food and exercise. I know I have a long way to go but I also know I can achieve my short term goal by June.

Update 4/1/08:  Change is good and a lot of changes are going on in my world at work and home. I am learning and growing with the times.
Haven't lost a lot more weight but I have lost inches and feel so much better. Your body will tell you so much if you will just listen! I am close to some of my short term goals and feel great about that.

Thanks for your encouragement.  Thanks also for checking on me.

Name: Nancy Hume

Location: Athol, Massachusetts
Resolution: Our family's financial paperwork is out of control and I've  fallen way behind. With God's help, I'm planning to get organized and  catch up on two years of doing just enough to get by. (Sad fact is - at work, I'm an Accountant.)

Update 8/1/08:   I'll admit it... I'm doing lousy. Chaos still reigns in my life.

Others keep scheduling things - babies and weddings & such - things that I can't control. Then we get water damage at our rental house and have to remodel the kitchen and repair the bathroom as well. Everyone wants everything done yesterday. So my personal deadlines get missed.

Last week I finally had to reply 'no' to my friend's wedding. I can't do that for my niece, though. Her bridal shower was yesterday. Of course, the Photo Coaster Set that I wrapped in the Victoria's Secret bag (to save time) was a hit.

Keep sending that monthly kick in the pants. Have a wonderful day!

Name: Velia Watts

Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Resolution: To take my husband out on a "date" every two weeks at least!!

Update 3/1/08: So far, I'm on track.  I've taken my husband out for dinner, I've cooked him a gourmet meal (this is a treat because he does most of the cooking at our house), and last weekend, I bought us a Tranquility Package from one of the spas in town. Thanks for keeping me accountable.

Update 4/1/08:  I'm doing very well.  We just returned from a cruise down to Mexico and a week in San Diego.  Now, that was some date!!

Update 6/1/08:  I'm doing well, Glenn. So far, I'm on track - a date with my husband every two weeks. Sometimes it's more than a date - we just got back from the Dominican Republic.

Update 7/1/08:  I'm on track!!  Recently took a trip to Vancouver and had a wonderful time
together.

Update 8/1/08: I'm right on track.  In fact, my husband and I are just finishing our weekend away from home for August.  We in Canada are fortunate enough to have a holiday in the beginning of August.

Update 11/1/08:  I'm still on track!!

Name: Jean Schilling

Location: Manly, Iowa
Resolution: 2 resolutions
First - to launch and succeed with a new accounting software platorm for our staff and our company.  Second - to travel to all 50 states before I turn 40 in June.

Update 6/1/08:  Jean Schilling replies that tomorrow is my 40th birthday. One of my resolutions was to make it to all 50 states before I turned 40. (I only need Utah and Hawaii). Not gonna happen. But it could very well happen WHILE I am 40 yet. As to the new accounting system, we are caught up to date, but we need to roll out daily functions to the staff. THANKS Glenn for the accountability!

Update 7/1/08:  My goals were to travel and launch new accounting systems.
The accounting is up to date with all 3 companies but I still need to launch shipping software, inventory controls and some more staff training.  My goal of making it to all 50 states before I turn 40?  Well I turned 40 on June 2 and still have Utah and Hawaii.  My revised goal is to make it to these states WHILE I am 40.

Update 9/1/08:  September 5, 2008.  All 3 companies are up and running in the new accounting software.  Inventory is up in one company and just starting on the big company (over 800 individual inventory codes on 2 different websites...)  Staff is LOVING the integrated system and shipping options.  Just wait until they get integrated inventory!   Travel resolution is still extended to until my birthday next June.  Our businesses are 4th quarter heavy.  Not gonna happen till next year.
THANK YOU for the accountability and high standards!

Name: Luke Montgomery

Location: Fulton, Mississippi

Resolution: I want to be able to run or jog six miles with a breeze.

Update 2/1/08: I have upped my treadmill routine to 3 miles four days a week.  I do this along with my regular workout of three days a week.  I hope to increase my treadmill workout to 4 miles before it is warm enough to hit the road.

Update 5/1/08:  Currently, I am jogging three miles four times per week. By the end of May, I want to be jogging four to five miles at least three times per week. I'm really enjoying it.

Update 6/1/08:  I had been running 3.1 miles three times each week for most of last month, but in anticipation of your monthly email, I ran 4 miles three times the last week of May.  By the end of June I want to be running 5 miles at a time.  Thanks to my new hobby of running I have lost 22 pounds.

Update 7/1/08:  Thanks to your monthly emails I am now able to run six miles easily.  I had always heard that running could be addictive and now I am sure of it.  I have now lost 28 pounds and am at my ideal weight.  Thanks again for helping me reach my goal.

Update 9/1/08: I'm still running and have now lost 33 pounds.  I haven’t been in this physical shape since high school. I appreciate this accountability service you offer to your fans.  I think you help people more than you know.

Name: Rick Corin

Location: London, Ontario Canada
Resolution: Get a better focus with personal health.  Target a weight reduction of 15 lbs; manage a diet with control and nutrition, and get back to a fitness routine throughout 2008.  My check points will be a new wardrobe at a smaller size and an improved golf game for the 2008 season.

Update 10/1/08:   Moving into October, everything remains as positive as it did in July.  I’m looking forward to a vacation in Portugal with my wife.  We both continue to visit the gym regularly and make Sunday afternoons our menu planning time for the next week. We recently had our Daughter get married and even she made the comment more than once:’ how can you always be so happy?’

As of April 15 I have since exceeded my goal and have lost 40 lbs.  I am back at the gym 3 times per week and feel great.  I took the challenge with my wife as we both joined weight watchers in January. With my wife’s commitment to her goal, she has taken over the cooking for the most part which has strengthened our relationship and has been fun deciding on menus for the week.  The golf game is showing good progress as well for both of us.  My co-workers want to know what ‘happy pills’ I’m taking!! I’ve dumped my wardrobe for a smaller size and the neighbourhood women have been teasing my wife to stay close before someone tries to steal her ‘new’ catch.

Glenn, your story on winners aren’t quitters will continue to be my inspiration.  Thanks for the ‘push’.

Name: Dory Hayman
Location: Salisbury, Maryland
Resolution: I want to be well on my way to establishing my independent voice-over business. I want a mix of large and small regular clients so I can be free to work for the best and give my best. I want my live music to be exceptional and noticed by those I respect and look up to.  Above all I want love, happiness and security for myself and for my loved ones.

Update 8/1/08:  My goal was to get my life moving in the right direction and it is! I want to do voice-over work as my own boss for my living. Tomorrow I'm going to NYC to record my second session with Nintendo for the Nintendo Channel promotional videos. I've also done several other freelance jobs as well. This Thursday I fly to Los Angeles for a four-day voice-over conference (Voice 2008). Glenn Shepard is truly an inspiration. Thank you so much.  Dory

Name: Henrietta Kellum

Location: Henderson, Tennessee

Resolution: I am resolved to be more spiritual in 2008.

Update 7/1/08: I am moving along pretty good in accomplishing my goal. I need to keep my schedule of early morning devotions & exercise, and then I will have a better day, everyday.

Update 12/1/08:  I am happy to say that I have almost made it through 2008 without being hit
by a deer.  Like you, I was hit in 2006 and 2007.  However, that was not apart of my 2008 New Year's Resolution.  I have managed to keep all of them except one.  I will put that one on my 2009 resolution, which I have already started as of yesterday.

Location: Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Resolution: Get my company back on track. Increase profitability and market share. Utilize employees to the best of their abilities. Pay off all debt.

Update 11/1/08:  On track and moving forward.  Thanks for keeping me reminded.  It helps.

Update 12/1/08:  I am on track and have meet or came close to reaching my goals.  Not completely but am happy with results.  I am already working on next year's goals.  Thank you for keeping me on track.

****************************************************************************

Name: Dena Scott

Location: Lafayette, Louisiana
Resolution: Personal goals...stay on track with my running/walking routine...do at least one 10K this year.  Finish my degree program this year! Professional goals...get better organized, more efficient, be a better leader.

Update 6/1/08:  Well, I've been somewhat consistent with my running/walking. I've recently completed a couple 5ks and still planning on doing a 10k in the fall. I'm on track with school and should finish in December. I guess I need to start working on the other stuff (being organized, being a better leader, etc.)

Update 11/1/08: Well, unfortunately I won't be doing the 10K next weekend that I had as one of my goals. My training took a back seat to homework.  The good news is my graduation is next month and I'll be graduating with honors, so the hard work paid off.  Then I'll be all focused on fitness and getting back in shape.  Work is great.  Lots of positive changes although I would love for Glenn to speak to my company. Wouldn't it be great if everyone had a great work ethic?  Hope everyone else has succeeded with accomplishing their goals!

Update 12/1/08:   Well, I did succeed with school.  I have my last final today and will be graduating in a couple of weeks.  However, homework and running/fitness does not mix, at least not for me since I've continued to work full time also.  So, I've recently joined a gym....taking baby steps and plan to really get going after this week! I'm still learning on how to be a better supervisor and still working on being more organized.  Hope you all had a wonderful year...and best wishes for the new one coming up!

Resolution: I resolve to have my home and office more organized and clutter free. I am also going to lose 75 lbs and keep stress down to a minimum and smile every day.

Update 10/1/08:  My office is not as cluttered as it was.  I have lost about 10 lbs and working on it.  Thank you for caring and giving us the support we need at times.

Update 11/1/08:  Thank you so much for being my accountability!!  I have lost some weight - about 6 lbs!  The organization part is not going so well.  We just found out my husband has lung cancer and will be going through 4 chemo treatments, to get those microscopic cells that escaped during surgery, which will last through February.  It kind of threw us for a loop.  But with God's grace and prayer we will make it through.

I love your newsletter!  It brightens my whole week!

Name: Heidi Alexander

Location: Mount Pleasant, Michigan
Resolution: To work on furthering my career this year, which has been  on hold for a while. My challenge is that my mother has cancer and I'll be taking more personal time off, but I need to get my career goals off  the back burner at some point.

Update 5/1/08: Still looking, but my priority is on caring for my mother right now, who doesn't have much longer to live.

Update 6/1/08: Glenn, honestly, my mom is in the last stages of her life, and I am spending more time with her, and trying to balance the whole work/life thing. I am looking, although I just can't devote more time to actively looking at this time

Update 7/1/08:  I'm still keeping a lookout for jobs, but I'm mostly absorbed in taking care of my mom right now. I'm looking into redefining my current job so that I can have more challenging duties, and delegate some of the more routine ones. With my mom's health, I have become more pro-active at work, and am making a better effort of prioritizing.

Update 8/1/08:  I'm still on the lookout for other positions, but cannot look further than the local area due to caring for my mother and my in laws. So, I'm networking and looking for local opportunities.

Update 9/1/08:Still keeping a lookout for opportunities.

Update 11/1/08:  My mother passed away last month, so my goals really shifted this year to focus on her care and spending time with her. I'll have to think about career goals next year

Update 12/1/08:  I'm looking ahead to next year and hopefully to better times. This has been a rough year for me.

Name: Carla McBee

Location: New Martinsville, West Virginia

Resolution: I would like to get healthy. I am overweight and I don't have a regular exercise routine. When one has a management position they need all the strength they can find; both mind and body! I would like to lose 30 pounds and strength my body with exercise. Thank you for this opportunity.

Update 2/1/08: Sorry to say I'm not doing so well. I did drag the treadmill in front of the TV and work out about 3 times. I know I am not doing my part. I have been working so many hours that I can't fit in the exercise because I'm so tired. I will try to do much better in Feb. Each day I will try to eat more healthy. I'm not very good at this losing weight deal. I have failed at it for 3 years. Still trying.

Update 6/1/08:  I have lost the same 5 pounds 3 times. I am so tired after working a full time job and 2 part time jobs that I don't even want to think about counting calories. Losing weight is not for sissies!!! I have decided to try to eat healthier and then try to limit my calories if I master that. I have started walking for exercise when I find the time. I know excuses won't get me anywhere. My birthday is Friday and a better diet and exercise would be a good gift to myself.

Update 12/1/08:Glenn,  I'm doing horrible.  I don't know how to get a grip on my weight.  I hold 3 jobs to make ends meet and I never stop working. I'm not a lazy person or irresponsible.  I broke down and paid the fee to work out at the local gym.  I started yesterday and am hoping to lose some by Christmas.  I have control of all other areas of my life and I'm very organized but I just can't seem to stop gaining weight.   Thanks for your concern and support.

Name: Charlotte Brown

Location: Springfield, Missouri
Resolution: To improve my health by challenging myself to a life style  make over.  Exercise - weight bearing and cardio at least 3 times a  week.  Start a nutritional program eating fruits and vegetables at least twice a day.  Carrying through with my resolution/goals will put me on the path to being a healthier, happier wife and employee.

Update 2/1/08: Good days and not so good.  I am continuing to try though.  Thanks for  checking.

Update 5/1/08:  Just a few set backs.  I was on vacation the past two weeks.  Did a lot of hiking but, the healthy diet wasn't always on the menu. Eating more fish, vegetables and fruit.  I am still facing difficulty with my eating choices on the weekend but, am working on that too.

Update 6/1/08:  Vacation for me was the first two weeks in May. We traveled West to the Grand Canyon and Mesa Verda. It was wonderful! Have been walking more, playing golf, etc. and am continuing to work on eating a healthy diet.

Update 7/1/08:  It's been a little more difficult than I had anticipated with summer fun. But, doing okay.

Update 8/1/08: I am walking more, playing golf and I just purchased a bicycle to begin a riding program.  I have been doing a better job with my eating plan but still have improvements to make.

Update 10/1/08:  Well, the allergies kicked in this month and my outdoor exercise program has
gone down the tube.  Am hopeful the allergy season will end soon and I can get back outside.

Update 12/1/08: I've had ups and downs with my resolution.  However, I have done more
hiking, walking and a little biking.  I plan to continue to incorporate more vegetables and fruit in my diet and work on exercising more.

Update 12/1/08:  I think I'm doing well keeping my resolution to spend more quality time with my family despite the demands of my job; though the number of hours working has yet to abate, I've tried to make sure I invest a similar amount in my family.

Update 11/1/08:  11.3.08 - Have not lost any weight; this is disappointing, but I haven't been as disciplined as I had planned.  Have been doing a LOT of walking, some with a coworker, and enjoying it!  Last month we walked the half-marathon (13.1 miles) in the Des Moines Marathon; had a great time!  Yesterday's six miles was a breeze.  Now just need to get the eating under control and should be able to make progress toward my goal.  Thanks for checking!

Name: Kristina Courtney

Location: Austin, Texas
Resolution: To do sit ups each morning to make my stomach more attractive after having my son.

Update 7/1/08:  Well my resolution is going fairly well.  I wanted to get into better shape, and I have done it.  I had about 5 "baby fat" pounds to lose from having my son, and those are gone.  I do some sit ups every morning, but we also got a puppy and I go on a 30 minute walk with her every morning.
I think that has really helped and I get to work feeling more alive and awake to start the day!  Thanks for checking in!

Update 10/1/08: Well, things are going very well.  My goal was to lose the remaining 5
pounds from having my son and start exercising regularly.  I have lost those 5 pounds and am walking about 2 miles every morning with my lab. I feel I am in much better shape.  I am also eating better.  Just making better choices.  Thanks for following up with me.

Update 11/1/08:  Still going strong with my weight loss.  I am at my ideal weight, but I am continuing my walking/running in the morning and trying to watch what I eat.  Football season makes things very hard!  Too much drinking and pizza!  Anyway, I am doing very well.  I can't believe it is already
November.  Thanks for the check in!

Resolution: To listen more.

Update 3/1/08: Resolution update for you..... have been listening more which means mouth does not move, right? When one teaches two learn. I work in Houston, TX. Many customers have accents... in retail I may assist 300 per day. I ask them to repeat the sentence to clearly understand them. And with a big smile make them smile also.  Thanks for checking our resolution.

Update 8/1/08:  Oooh, yes, keep your mouth shut while others speak. It is called listening. Have been listening more. Learning is the result. We all wear so many hats each day that switching hats causes baldness. Don't quote me, please. smile. I deal with the public everyday at a convenience store in Houston ..... from translating body language to gasoline pump nosal instructions ooooppss forgot food management operations, imagination brain cells vibrate. Life is an adventure.

Update 10/1/08: Thanks for the email. Enjoy and learn from your correspondence.
I am listening more and remembering more. Thinking positively... ya know electricity attracts electricity... like a magnet. Had a little hurricane in Houston on the 15th.... good experience for the work place dealing with customers and lack of electricity. Life is an adventure.

Update 11/1/08:  Resolution was  listen more. What really helped was to write down what I heard. I work with the public, run a house, help mom and get time in for me. Writing down with notes helped not confuse our little "to do" lists for each location.

Update 10/1/08:  After nine months of struggling...I can finally respond to your e-mail in a positive way.  My biggest concern in January was weight.  I really felt the need to be healthier and my weight was definitely a concern.  After 11 pounds of weight loss, I'm feeling much better.  My confidence is showing here at work and, just think, if the economy gets even worse....eating will no longer be one of the first things I think of anymore. Thanks for keeping track and I am also proud that I can be one of your "improved"!!

Update 10/1/08:  Let's just say that although I have continued to diligently work as hard
as I can to become the best manager I can be for my company, there have been numerous obstacles that have somewhat hindered my success. I have found that I actually have less "control" and "say so" and have had to find ways to work around it to run my branch successfully! This year has been if
anything, a trying year! BUT, I'm still here and God willing will continue to work hard to perform to the best of my abilities.  Maybe with next year's resolution I won't be so hard on myself!!!
Thanks for all your positive emails and advise through out the year!

Name: Janice Leonard-Hoffman

Location: Aiken, South Carolina
Resolution: I will spend more quality time with my children and give  them my complete attention. I will use the talents and abilities that GOD  has given me to make a positive difference in the lives of those that  I come in contact with on a daily basis. I will listen more and talk  less. I will find quiet time daily to read my bible and to pray. I will  lead by example.

Update 10/1/08:  My goal to "Lead by example" paid off, I was promoted to Executive Director for my non-profit agency in April. I also said that I will "listen more and talk less."  While I do not know if that is always possible in my current role, as I have so many presentations to do, etc. I listen actively to all of my staff as well as colleagues-more than I talk.  This has helped me greatly in my new position.  I have found that when new leadership steps in there is a period of "attitude adjustment" on behalf of some. I have terminated 1 employee since coming on and anticipate more challenging employees and situations to come, but I am thinking positive!

Unfortunately, the overwhelming responsibilities that have come with my new role has not afforded me (yet) with all of the opportunities that I would like and need with my children. I have started singing in the choir again, which is my gift, but I have had to miss quite a few times due to work issues.  What is the saying, "be careful what you wish for..." I love managing, but it is all consuming at this time and my priorities to my children are taking the backseat regrettably.  I will be looking at some of Glenn's seminars to help me develop in areas where I can free up some critical time and sanity!

Name: Denise Ferguson

Location: Rome, Georgia
Resolution: My goal is to take better care of myself.  To lower my sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol so that I will be here longer to play with my grandson, Clay.  Please pray for me.

Update 3/1/08: I haven't felt this good in 10 years.  I wanted to get healthy for my kids and grandchild.  To date I have dropped 27 lbs.  I have taken 3 nutrition classes and have my high blood pressure and diabetes under control.  I am now motivated to start exercising on a daily routine.  Thanks for keeping tabs with me.

Update 4/1/08:  Being held accountable does help me continue to make the right choices.  I have now lost a total of 31 pounds.  I have more energy and for the first time in two years I have been out in my flower beds pulling weeds and transplanting flowers.  Please keep me in your prays because it is easy to keep on track when you feel tired and sick but as the energy level has increased I have noticed that so have my cravings for sweet and high fat foods.

Update 5/1/08:  Wow, I can’t believe 4 months have passed.  I have hit a plateau at 31 lbs weight loss and was beginning to get discouraged, but then I found out that my type 2 diabetes is under better control and I can stop taking one of my pills a day, so that was fantastic news. If I keep active and continue to eat healthy may be able to stop taking medicine for diabetes completely.  I received an early Mothers Day present from my children, two precious German shepherd puppies, which should help me stay even more active.  Thanks for checking up on me and keep me in your prayers.

Update 7/1/08:  It's been six months and the last month was the hardest so far due to
hitting a plateau with my weight.  I am however very grateful for the 35 lbs
I have lost.  I hope with continued exercise and eating healthy I will start
to lose again soon.

Update 8/1/08:  It has been a bad month...finding myself slipping into old eating habits
probably due to summer. Thanks for checking it reminds me to keep moving
forward with a healthier life style.

Update 9/1/08:Not doing as well as I hoped.  I had been slipping back into old habits but
after my vacation I am back on track again.

Update 10/1/08: The great Fall weather has me energized again. Thanks to you for keeping
tabs.  P.S.  Have a great birthday.  Mine is the 20th of October too, but I will be 52.

I need to re-think, because I can now eat all the Easter candy I want in comfort, but I can't drink a glass of milk without getting sick! New Year's resolutions apparently aren't for sissies either!

Update 10/1/08: Thank you for checking. I have adapted to the lactose intolerance, and am

Update 3/1/08: I have lost 9 lbs and begin Pilates this week.

Update 6/1/08:   I have started walking at the park two days a week and have lost 15 pound.

Update 8/1/08:  I have been doing good in the exercise area, but fell back into old eating habits with stress and gained 3 pounds. I am playing golf at least once a week and I continue to do strength training and flex exercises at home. All in all I am happy with at least sticking to it for 7 months. Thanks for making me accountable, it helps to know I have to report to someone. Love your articles and wish I could attend one of your seminars, but they are to far away for the traveling budget. Thanks again.

Update 10/1/08: I take my last golf lesson this Friday and I plan on playing golf every
other week on flex Fridays when possible. This is a great exercise program that will get me out and about. I also listen to books on tape and use my treadmill. I have reached a plateau on my weight loss and am holding. I will face the hardest three months coming up with stress at year end for work and the holidays. I hope to have a good report come January.
