be recognized as a professional.
Update 3/1/08: I'm on my way. I

Update 11/1/08:
I passed the exam last
month! I am awaiting official notification before I can consider
myself an Emergency Number Professional (ENP). So, the goal has been
met. On to my advanced certification for Emergency Management.
Thanks for the push.
Update 12/1/08:
I DID it!
I achieved my goal, which was to pass the Emergency
Number Professional exam in order to gain that professional
recognition. I really think the extra "kick in the pants" via
these reminders helped me to stay the course. Now to keep the
certification up..

Of the three goals I am

grateful for the things I have and most importantly the wife I have
never take her for granted. 2. learn the new accounting system

Goal #3. My wife is definitely benefiting from this
move.

Name: Jean Cahill
Location: Stoughton,
Massachusetts Resolution: My resolution is to stop being a
sissy so that I can be a better manager of my nursing unit.
Update
4/1/08: I am
still having trouble delegating and feeling like I am the boss. I am
a unit manager without confidence. I know what to do and how to do
it but am too easy on people. This is not a quality of a good
manager. My boss says I am good but need to be more stern. My
company is sending me to management training so I am hoping to grow
and fulfill my new years resolution. Wish me luck!
Update 5/1/08: I am
doing better with my resolution although I am hitting some
roadblocks. It is difficult to keep up with all the staff issues I
need to deal with and keep up with all the clinical issues other
nurses do not have the knowledge of dealing with. I wish there was
some way to get more things done in the same time frame. I started
management training this week. It was nice to see other managers and
charge nurses have the same issues that I do. I am excited to learn
that we have a new resource person to help with some issues. I
feel like I am gaining more experience as the time goes by. At least
my boss thinks I have grown. Until next time..
Update 9/1/08:
My
new years resolution is going great. I am really learning how to
communicate well. Just yesterday I stood up to all the
higher-ups in my building. The politics in a business can really
have an impact on your department. I work on a very busy sub acute
nursing unit. I've learned that it is a fine line between being a
manager and being a worker. There is a very delicate balance between
who works under you and who communicates the company's agenda. I
have to follow the policies, even if I do not agree with all of
them, and discipline staff when indicated but still be able to get
them to do what I need and "treat them like family". It is difficult
not being, "one of the guys" but I have learned first hand why it is
not possible to be this and be a boss. I feel I have
grown since you first asked me for my resolution. I have learned how
to delegate more and speak up for my unit to get what my patients
and staff need in this difficult period of healthcare in the
US.

Name: Herb Hamilton
Location: Elverson,
Pennsylvania Resolution: I resolve to give more money away
to charity. Specifically a 10% increase over what I gave in
2007.
Update 4/1/08: Tough
economy is making it hard to keep my resolution. But I am
giving more to charities than I did last year. I am also
giving more of my time so it's a double bonus. Thanks for checking
up.
Update 7/1/08: This
public resolution of personal accountability is the equivalent to
a declaration of self-independence. The excuses to fail in
giving 10% more money to charity are built in this year.
Fuel costs, food costs, a bleak economic outlook and family woes
are combining to provide reasons for failure. I may have
given up without this public declaration.
Over the Memorial
Day weekend I served at a charity sales event. I had a great
time. Giving of my time is the single biggest benefit that I
have received from my resolution this year. Yes, I am keeping
up with the financial end but I had no idea that I would feel such
joy when I gave my time.
Thank you for holding me accountable Glenn!

From
the Desk of Glenn Shepard
December 29, 2008
It's hard to believe 2008 is over, isn’t it?
Whether you kept your resolution isn’t as important
as the fact that you made one, and had the guts to declare it
publicly.
Succeeding is wonderful, but failure is also a part
of life.
The thing that’s totally unacceptable is aimlessly
wasting a precious year of life without any direction.
That’s why you deserve to be applauded for
participating in our 2008 New Year’s Resolution program.
As Rick Warren and Napoleon Hill would say, you’re
living your life with a definite purpose.
I’m proud of you, and thank you for letting me play a
small part in your life.
If you haven’t yet done so, please send us the final
update on your New Year’s resolution for 2008 now by clicking
here.
Be sure to include your FIRST AND LAST name in the
body of your email so we can match your update with your resolution.
Again, my heartfelt congratulations for making your
2008 count.
That makes you a rare and special individual.
Warmest Regards,

Update 3/1/08: I am happy to
report I have been doing very well with my resolution to take
control of my finances. My budget is working so far, and it
feels so good to be in control. I can’t express how cool it
was when, in the first week of applying my new way of life, I had a
flat tire that could not be plugged and had to be replaced.
Not only did I still have money in the bank two days before payday
(unheard of before turning over a new leaf), but I was able to
purchase the new tire and stay within my allowance for the
week! I was so stoked; I called my brother the banker who is
helping me get on track. I usually don’t do New Year’s

failure. (I now see the errors in that statement.)

Update 4/1/08:
Progress is slow, but
your reminder has given me a push to keep moving towards being a
stronger, more assertive manager. THANKS!
Update 7/1/08: Progress- I
wish I could say that it is going GREAT, but it is not! I am moving
VERY slowly in the right direction, but this "resolution" was (and
is) a huge task. Some of the progress towards my goal of
relinquishing my manager position is related to other individuals'
decisions: ie: exit strategies for the controlling partner, sale of
the practice. On a more positive note, I feel I have become a little
less "wishy-washy" of a manager thru all of this. I have been better
able to confront employees with issues! So, like I said, progress is
slow, but it is in the right direction! Thanks for keeping me on
track with your reminder!

Name: Judy Stella
Location: Derry, New Hampshire
Resolution: I resolve that I will have
a healthy and happier year. 2007 was the worst year I've had in my
53 years on this planet. My health was extremely bad and on top of
it I got a divorce after 33 years of marriage. I'm looking at 2008
as the beginning of a new life!
Update 10/1/08:
I was so looking
forward to this year. I was keeping my head above water and
was pretty healthy. Then on May 27th I slipped and fell at
work. My left foot was broken (my toes were dislocated from my
foot), my right knee was badly bruised and I injured my right
shoulder. I had surgery in June to repair my foot.
There are now 2 long screws holding my toes on. I was out
of work for 2 months. I had physical therapy on both my foot
and shoulder. My shoulder was not responding so they
finally did a MRI. I have a torn rotator cuff. I am
scheduled for surgery on the shoulder within the next week.
I will be out of work for at least another 6 weeks with another 2
months of physical therapy. In the February timeframe I will
have to have surgery on my foot to remove the screws. I am
having trouble keeping up with the bills and I'm working with the
mortgage company to try and get a loan modification so that I can
keep my house. Heating season is upon us in the Northeast
and oil prices are crazy.
All in all I'm holding up.
Even if I lose my house it's not the worse thing that could
happen. I have terrific family and friends. I still have my
job that I love (I've been at the company for 30 years). I
just found out that accidents aren't for sissies either!!

Glenn thank you for being my tough love

Update 3/1/08: Thank you for
taking time for me....the last 2 months have been great. My husband
and I are involved with a new motorcycle ministry at our church and
it is amazing how God will work in your life when you become
available and obedient. I have lost 13 lbs. and feel so much better,
not only because of the weight but treating my body a little better

Update 4/1/08: Change is

I am learning and growing with the times. Haven't lost a lot
more weight but I have lost inches and feel so much better. Your

Update 8/1/08:
I'll admit it...
I'm doing lousy. Chaos still reigns in my life.
Others keep scheduling things - babies and

Last week I finally had to reply 'no' to my

Update 6/1/08: Jean
Schilling replies that tomorrow is my 40th birthday. One of my
resolutions was to make it to all 50 states before I turned 40. (I
only need Utah and Hawaii). Not gonna happen. But it could very well
happen WHILE I am 40 yet. As to the new accounting system, we are
caught up to date, but we need to roll out daily functions to the
staff. THANKS Glenn for the accountability!
Update 7/1/08: My goals
were to travel and launch new accounting systems.
The accounting is up to date with all 3 companies but I
still need to launch shipping software, inventory controls and some
more staff training. My goal of making it to all 50 states
before I turn 40? Well I turned 40 on June 2 and still have
Utah and Hawaii. My revised goal is to make it to these states
WHILE I am 40.
Update 9/1/08:
September 5, 2008.
All 3 companies are up and running in the new accounting
software. Inventory is up in one company and just starting on
the big company (over 800 individual inventory codes on 2 different
websites...) Staff is LOVING the integrated system and
shipping options. Just wait until they get integrated
inventory! Travel resolution is still extended to until
my birthday next June. Our businesses are 4th quarter
heavy. Not gonna happen till next year. THANK YOU for the
accountability and high standards!

Update 5/1/08: Currently,
I am jogging three miles four times per week. By the end of May, I
want to be jogging four to five miles at least three times per week.
I'm really enjoying it.
Update 6/1/08: I had been
running 3.1 miles three times each week for most of last month, but
in anticipation of your monthly email, I ran 4 miles three times the

weight. Thanks again for helping me reach my

Update 10/1/08:
Moving into October, everything remains as positive as it
did in July. I’m looking forward to a vacation in Portugal
with my wife. We both continue to visit the gym regularly and
make Sunday afternoons our menu planning time for the next week. We
recently had our Daughter get married and even she made the comment
more than once:’ how can you always be so happy?’
As of April 15 I have since exceeded my goal
and have lost 40 lbs. I am back at the gym 3 times per week
and feel great. I took the challenge with my wife as we both
joined weight watchers in January. With my wife’s commitment to her
goal, she has taken over the cooking for the most part which has
strengthened our relationship and has been fun deciding on menus for
the week. The golf game is showing good progress as well for
both of us. My co-workers want to know what ‘happy pills’ I’m
taking!! I’ve dumped my wardrobe for a smaller size and the
neighbourhood women have been teasing my wife to stay close before
someone tries to steal her ‘new’ catch.

completed a couple 5ks and still planning on doing a 10k in the
fall. I'm on track with school and should finish in December. I
guess I need to start working on the other stuff (being organized,
being a better leader, etc.)
Update 11/1/08: Well,
unfortunately I won't be doing the 10K next weekend that I had as
one of my goals. My training took a back seat to homework. The
good news is my graduation is next month and I'll be graduating with
honors, so the hard work paid off. Then I'll be all focused on
fitness and getting back in shape. Work is great. Lots
of positive changes although I would love for Glenn to speak to my

Hope everyone else has succeeded with accomplishing their goals!
Update 12/1/08: Well, I did succeed with school. I have
my last final today and will be graduating in a couple of weeks.
However, homework and running/fitness does not mix, at least not for
me since I've continued to work full time also. So, I've
recently joined a gym....taking baby steps and plan to really get
going after this week! I'm still learning on how to be a better

time. I know excuses won't get me anywhere. My birthday is Friday
and a better diet and exercise would be a good gift to myself.
Update 12/1/08:Glenn, I'm
doing horrible. I don't know how to get a grip on my
weight. I hold 3 jobs to make ends meet and I never stop
working. I'm not a lazy person or irresponsible. I
broke down and paid the fee to work out at the local gym. I
started yesterday and am hoping to lose some by Christmas. I
have control of all other areas of my life and I'm very organized
but I just can't seem to stop gaining weight. Thanks for
your concern and support.

lose from having my son, and those are gone. I do some sit ups
every morning, but we also got a puppy and I go on a 30 minute walk

5 pounds from having my son and start exercising regularly.

update for you..... have been listening more which means mouth does

Many customers have accents... in retail I may assist 300 per day. I
ask them to repeat the sentence to clearly understand them. And with
a big smile make them smile also. Thanks for checking our

Update 8/1/08:
Oooh, yes, keep your
mouth shut while others speak. It is called listening. Have been
listening more. Learning is the result. We all wear so many hats
each day that switching hats causes baldness. Don't quote me,
please. smile. I deal with the public everyday at a convenience
store in Houston ..... from translating body language to gasoline
pump nosal instructions ooooppss forgot food management operations,
imagination brain cells vibrate. Life is an adventure.
Update 10/1/08: Thanks for the

electricity attracts electricity... like a magnet. Had a little
hurricane in Houston on the 15th.... good experience for the work
place dealing with customers and lack of electricity. Life is an
adventure.
Update 11/1/08:
Resolution was listen more. What really helped was to
write down what I heard. I work with the public, run a house, help
mom and get time in for me. Writing down with notes helped not
confuse our little "to do" lists for each location.

positive difference in the lives of those that I come in
contact with on a daily basis. I will listen more and talk
less. I will find quiet time daily to read my bible and to
pray. I will lead by example.
Update 10/1/08: My goal
to "Lead by example" paid off, I was promoted to Executive Director
for my non-profit agency in April. I also said that I will "listen
more and talk less." While I do not know if that is always
possible in my current role, as I have so many presentations to do,
etc. I listen actively to all of my staff as well as colleagues-more
than I talk. This has helped me greatly in my new
position. I have found that when new leadership steps in there
is a period of "attitude adjustment" on behalf of some. I have
terminated 1 employee since coming on and anticipate more
challenging employees and situations to come, but I am thinking
positive!
Unfortunately, the overwhelming
responsibilities that have come with my new role has not afforded me
(yet) with all of the opportunities that I would like and need with
my children. I have started singing in the choir again, which is my
gift, but I have had to miss quite a few times due to work
issues. What is the saying, "be careful what you wish for..."
I love managing, but it is all consuming at this time and my
priorities to my children are taking the backseat regrettably.
I will be looking at some of Glenn's seminars to help me develop in
areas where I can free up some critical time and sanity!

grandchild. To date I have dropped 27 lbs. I have taken
3 nutrition classes and have my high blood pressure and diabetes
under control. I am now motivated to start exercising on a
daily routine. Thanks for keeping tabs with me.
Update 4/1/08: Being held
accountable does help me continue to make the right choices. I
have now lost a total of 31 pounds. I have more energy and for
the first time in two years I have been out in my flower beds
pulling weeds and transplanting flowers. Please keep me in
your prays because it is easy to keep on track when you feel tired
and sick but as the energy level has increased I have noticed that
so have my cravings for sweet and high fat foods.
Update 5/1/08: Wow, I
can’t believe 4 months have passed. I have hit a plateau at 31
lbs weight loss and was beginning to get discouraged, but then I
found out that my type 2 diabetes is under better control and I can
stop taking one of my pills a day, so that was fantastic news. If I
keep active and continue to eat healthy may be able to stop taking
medicine for diabetes completely. I received an early Mothers
Day present from my children, two precious German shepherd puppies,
which should help me stay even more active. Thanks for
checking up on me and keep me in your prayers.
Update 7/1/08: It's been
six months and the last month was the hardest so far due
to hitting a plateau with my weight. I am however very
grateful for the 35 lbs I have lost. I hope with continued
exercise and eating healthy I will start to lose again
soon.
